On this day and age with all the technology and stuff, it's hard for me to understand why and how something like this keeps on happening over and over again.:scratchchin:

I'm on top of it homie I'm about to go to Navy boot camp and I'm ready to kick some Somali pirate ass baby. I'm so proud that the Navy Seals took out three of those losers that's how we do it now that they got the attention fo the US their days are numbered. What we need though is a colletral agreement between the countries like US, Iran, Saudia, Arabia etc to secure that region. It's in everyone's interest so we can put our differences aside ie Iran and US and come to a conclusion.
By the way homie what in the hell is Katt? Is it like weed or something like that they smoke and get high?

I actually saw a documentary a while ago. These pirates are licing it large. You would not believe how well off and equipped they are.

As for why major countries don't do more, I think it's really tough to patrol such large areas, unless you have 24 hr. aerial surveilance, 'cause no warship can move anywhere at the speed these little boats travel at.

Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations in a letter to Secretary General Ban Ki-moon informed him of Tehran’s will to send 2 warships to Somalia’s coastal waters and Gulf of Aden to confront pirates and safeguard Iranian commercial and oil cargo ships.

Mohammad Khaza’ie in the letter refers to the international efforts aimed at combating piracy in Gulf of Aden and the coastal waters of Somalia.

According to the Islamic republic news agency, Khaza’ie in his letter added that the Iranian Navy ships would take position at operation region within the next two days and remain there for a period of at least five months.

The Iranian warships would in addition to safeguarding the Iranians ships and ships that are in a way related to Iran assist any other foreign ship that would seek assistance against the pirates, and help Somalia government in its combat against piracy.

According to UN Security Council resolutions, different countries can send their warships to the Gulf of Aden and coastal waters of Somalia against the pirates and even with prior notice to Somali Government enter the territorial waters of that country in pursuit of that country’s sea pirates.

So far a noticeable number of world countries have send their warships to that region to safeguard their ships and confront the pirates.

Didn't they do that already, and got a warship attacked by the pirates and needed a US warship to rescue them?

" And God created Somalia and laughed ".

What a wasteland and miserable nation with a failed government acting like a thorn on the side of whole international community.
I personally will not use the term "Pirates", they are terrorist robbing all nations in the world.
Classical "Piracy" was ended by end of 19th century, pirates didn't belong to specific nation, they only had their sailboats, their own flags and any land they could plunder. These guys can be identified as Somalians and indeed are terrorists. World politicians are not using that term because if they do then they must fight with them meaning they have to spend money while every nation's valet is getting tighter than ever.

I don't think there is short term solution for this world problem.
Overwhelming naval force and sea blockade will work in short term but as soon as navies leave the area they will return and probably with better training, equipment and weapons. At the other hand majority of the nations have some sort of interest in shipping lanes passing through Gulf of Aden but we don't see all of them sending naval forces there. Right now there around 10 countries (including Iran) which have naval ships paroling Horn of Africa.

They can try to send in land forces and take over the country and set up another government in Mogadishu with strong security forces, but the problem is after US-Iraq fiasco no one around the world believe in "Nation Building" any more. Although they tried it before and it didn't work. Remember the "Black Hawk Down" during Clinton?

They can't put guns and armed security forces in the freighters because no port in the world will allow a ship with a single handgun to duck in. Also insurance companies policies prohibit any sort of weapons in commercial ships unless shipping company is willing to pay very high insurance premium to do so.
There are about 40 commercial ships passing through Gulf of Aden ever day, They can make them sail like a convoy with smallest safe gap in between and naval vessels already in the area can escort them out to the open sea or deep into the Red Sea if they are north bound.

:D I have my own solution, the easiest and cheapest possible.
These terrorist are doing this for money, right? Then get in touch with them and take bunch of them under a good payroll, give them some cheap naval craft and have them patrol their own waters. They sure are the best for distinguishing between a local villager sailing for fishing and the ones are to terrorize the open waters.

Its all about poverty............
Differ!!
Haiti, Eritrea and Djibouti are way more poor than Somali. Income from Somalian coffee export probably exceeds total GDP of those 3 nations combined.
