According to that only 5 mil votes have been counted. There are reports that more than 40 mil have voted. So, there is no way they can conclude who won.

Iran rivals both declare victory

The two main candidates in Iran's presidential election have claimed victory, after extended voting as huge numbers of people turned out to vote.

Reformist challenger Mir Hossein Mousavi told a news conference that he had won by a substantial margin.

However, state media said incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had won, and electoral officials said partial results put him ahead on 69%.

But Mr Mousavi has complained of some voting irregularities.

He said there had been a shortage of ballot papers and millions of people had been denied the right to vote.

His election monitors were not allowed enough access to polling stations, he added, saying he would deal seriously with any fraud.

The BBC's Jon Leyne in Tehran says that, with the count barely having begun, this could be a case of the two candidates just sending a warning.

Shahin jan, there are rules in Iran too just as in the US. But what is true in both cases is that whoever is in power for counting the votes specially for a highly contested position, is likely to cheat. Just as the cheatings here were in Florida where Bush's bro was in charge. And people know that in Iran too.
One way to face this issue is to say I know my vote is not going to count and sit out, or you can stand up and try to force them to take you seriously. It seems people of Iran are doing the latter. This is one way of gaining confidence and fighting the regime.

IRIB just intervied head of election thingy in iran. he said they will public new statistics in 1 hour! lol!!!... he wont publish updated stats like they did up til now..

he said all votes will be counted in around 7-8am Iran time.

I don't think they can, even if they wanted to! It looks like an all out military rule (sepah in this case) on the streets for the next few days for sure. The point of no return has been crossed. They're either going to have to arrest Karoubi and Mousavi in an all out war and stand against the people for the next few years, or AN's going to have to step down at this point, even if he has majority vote.

You can't cover something like this up IMHO. The polls were showing Mousavi ahead by almost 3-1, to say that it turned around to 2-1 in the other direction within a few final hours and after campaigning finished, is something only dumb AN supporters would think is possible.

There's a lot I can talk about but I won't. Just know that his entire daily activities consisted of arguing about football on various boards, often with people half his own age. He was asked about his job on a number of occasions, but it was obvious he wasn't working. He came from a well-off background and was living off family money.

There was also a time when a friend or relative staged an intervention and posted on various boards that Ken has agreed to cut down his internet addiction with Ken himself posting to say goodbye, only to return a day later!

Serving IR has been very good to him and literally turned his life around. Although his shilling for the regime makes me nauseous, his gratitude for them is understandable.

On a separate note, I don't know if this has been said yet, but this coup is pretty much the end of all hopes for reforming this regime. This was a short-term victory for them but they will regret it in the long run. Even if they loosen up in the next election, there is no way people will trust them again. The turn-out will be as low as it was back in the late 80's and early 90's.

I'm also done worrying about that country anymore. It's over. From now on, my interest in Iranian politics will be that of a passive observer. This country won't be fixed in my life time, and I have other problems to worry about.

I'm heading out to get drunk and forget about this circus. I've wasted enough time with it. Never again.

I agree but I am just finding it hard to believe, maybe I was just positive and naïve and im seeing things that arent there, lack of balls seems to be very clear in our people and its really easy to say for me too sitting behind a laptop too I realise that but still this is really really bad. Chikar konam fekr kardam indafeh it maybe different, I just love my country and accepting the state its in isnt easy for me especially if change doesnt seem to be comming any time soon. Some people put too much fate in the elections knowing what would happen before hand, but I dont like giving up on Iran eventhough its appealing at times. Looking at it with hindsight, I should have known this would be a meaningless election, even if AN wouldnt get realected I doubt something would happen soon, I am more irritated by how obvious the fixing has been done.

Shahin jaan, that was from "unverified" e-mail reports sent to BBC Persian. Whatever that means. I doubt the BBC is making this sutff up. But, that's not to say people in Iran aren't sending these e-mails. If that's the case, at least it suggests there's an organized effort to let the world know the people or groups in Iran are ready, if the world wants to listen.

If all the peaceful means of requesting a change, asking for change, begging for change and taking action for change in a democratic system (ie. voting)have been exuahsted, shouldn't we support the only remaining option... FORCING CHANGE?

The answer is clear to me and I think it should be to most of you. The times of staying on the sideline, "kenaare god neshastan", are over. But "THIS" ISN'T OVER. This is just the beginning. The only part that's over is the fairy tale that we had all built up in our minds - that Iran can change and will change slowly and on its own. Our Iran is a heroin addict; She is the 16 year old that's being hung in public from a crane. Our Iran is the tortured prisoner in Evin. Our Iran is bleeding, sick and weak. This Iran is not going to pull through without us, without our help and without everything that we have to offer.

We've sat in this corner of the world, made our own little Iranian corner, but the blood that's pumping through our veins is gushing out, at the other corner of the world. We are Iranian for God's sake. We got rid of many "selselehs" much bigger than the IR, much stronger than the IR. We didn't give up. So, go ahead and have your few misery drinks, but DON't GIVE UP.

This should have only shown us more reasons to be together, united, determined, pumped and ready to force that change. Are we going to support people in Iran running out and taking out "strategic" non-civilian targets like Basij and Sepah headquarters?! Are we going to change our position to support an armed resistance to the regime (committed to absolute minimum loss of civilian life)? Are we going to run to our elected officials in the West and lobby for this "armed resistance" not to be labelled as a terrorist group? Are we going to force our opposition groups outside Iran to unite? Are we going to provide any means at our disposal, be it finanical or technical expertise to support a co-ordinated resistance to the regime? Or are we going to sit on our asses and whine about how God doesn't exist and if he does, he really did us wrong, so he can't be a good God "anyway"l?

There are tough choices we have to make, but if you answered "yes" to any of the above questions, except the last on, you have alreay taken the most important step - making that tough choice . You and I and many Iranians inside and outside want change. We know it's the majorty and we've asked for it, we've begged for it, we've requested it and now we've voted for it. OUR APPLICATION HAS BEEN DENIED. So I ask all of you this question... You want US to tell our friends REZA and Ashtar that we've given up? You want us to say out loud that we bowed and will bow to opression and tyranny? More or less my sentiments. My personal opinion has always been that any type of change or democracy movement needs to be gradual in order to work.
Guess it doesn't work in Iran that well...it's definitely over.

نتايجي كه براي دهمين دوره انتخابات رياست جمهوري اعلام شد بهت آور است مردمي كه در صفهاي طولاني اخذ راي شاهد تركيب آرا بودند و خود مي دانند كه به چه كسي راي داده اند با حيرت تمام به شعبده بازي دست اندركاران انتخابات و صدا و سيما نگاه مي كنند. آنان اينك بيش از هميشه به دنبال آن هستند كه بدانند چگونه و توسط چه كساني و مقاماتي طرح اين بازي بزرگ ريخته شده است. اينجانب ضمن اعتراض شديد به روند موجود و تخلفات آشكار و فراوان روز انتخابات هشدار مي دهم كه تسليم اين صحنه آرايي خطرناك نخواهم شد. نتيجه آنچه كه از عملكرد متصديان بي امانت ديده ايم و مي بينيم جز تزلزل اركان نظام مقدس جمهوري اسلامي ايران و حاكميت دروغ و استبداد نيست. اينجانب طبق وظيفه شرعي و ملي خويش به افشاي رازهاي پشت سر اين روند پرمخاطره خواهم پرداخت و آثار نابود كننده آن را بر سرنوشت كشور توضيح خواهم داد و ترس آن دارم كه ادامه وضع موجود همه نيروهاي موثر در نظام را به توجيه گراني دروغگو در مقابل مردم تبديل كند و دنيا و آخرت آنان را در معرض لطمه هاي جبران ناپذير قرار دهد.
به مسوولان توصيه مي كنم بيش از آن كه دير شود اين روند را فورا متوقف كنند و همگي به خط قانون و امانتداري از آراي ملت بازگردند و بدانند كه خروج از عدالت مشروعيت زداست. آنان بيش از هر كس ديگر از اين حقيقت باخبرند كه در اين كشور انقلابي بزرگ و اسلامي صورت گرفته است. كمترين پيام انقلاب ما اين است كه مردم آگاهند و در برابر كساني كه با تقلب روي كار بيايند تمكين نخواهند كرد.
اينجانب از همين فرصت استفاده ميكنم و ضمن تشكر از عواطف ملت بزرگوار ايران به آنان تذكر مي دهم كه ايران اين موجود آسماني متعلق به آنان است و نه متقلبان، اين آنان هستند كه بايد با هوشياري خود از آن حفاظت كنند. خائنين به آراء مردم ابايي از آن ندارند كه اين خانه پارسايان به آتش كشيده شود. ما موج عقلانيت سبز خود را كه برگرفته از تعاليم ديني و علايق ملت ما به اهل بيت پيامبر(ص) است با تمامي شور ادامه مي دهيم و با شورش دروغ كه در كشور طغيان كرده و چهره آن را آلوده است مبارزه ميكنيم، اما اجازه نخواهيم داد كه حركات ما شكل كور به خود بگيرد.
جا دارد از يكايك شهرونداني كه براي رساندن اين پيام سبز هر كدام ستادي بودند و تمامي ستادهاي مردمي و رسمي كه در انتخابات فعاليت ميكردند سپاسگذاري كنم و تاكيد نمايم كه تا رسيدن به نتيجه اي كه كشور ما لايق آن است همچنان به حضور و تلاش آنان نياز است.
