Bi-Honar 08-02-2009, 05:22 PM Iran’s Khatami Says Protestors’ Trial a Sham; Hearings Continue
By Ladane Nasseri
Aug. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Iran’s former president Mohammad Ali Khatami, a backer of the opposition movement, denounced as a sham the trial of protestors detained after the country’s disputed re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, as the hearings continued for a second day. “What has been named the trial of the defendants involved in recent events is against the constitution, regular laws and citizens’ rights,” Khatami was quoted by his Web site as saying yesterday. “Confessions made under certain circumstances are not valid.”
Iran started yesterday the trial of some 100 people including opposition figures, activists and journalists arrested during riots that followed the results of the June 12 presidential election, which defeated candidates Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karrubi say were rigged. Another 10 individuals were put on trial today, state-run Iranian Students News Agency reported, citing an unidentified judiciary official.
Mousavi, the main opposition challenger in the election, denounced the string of alleged confessions published by state media since yesterday, as a show ahead of Ahmadinejad’s inauguration tomorrow. “The scenes that we saw are nothing but a poor preparation for the start of the government” of Ahmadinejad, he said in a statement on his Web site. “They are expecting to show that no fraud has taken place through a court which is itself fraudulent. They are relying on confessions behind which the use of medieval style torture is apparent,” Mousavi said.
The government used the police and a paramilitary force to crack down on protests that followed the election. As many as 30 people died, according to lawmaker Farhad Tajari, deputy head of the parliament’s judiciary committee. The judiciary has accused defendants of offenses such as having links to terrorist groups, carrying weapons, targeting the police, sending pictures and footage to western media, which Iranian officials say is set on weakening the Islamic republic’s regime, and working towards a “velvet revolution.’ Mohammad Ali Abtahi, who served as vice president under Khatami and backed Karrubi’s campaign, was one of the most well-known figures to appear in yesterday’s trial.
Fuel Unrest
“The issue of fraud in the election was a lie. It was set up to fuel unrest so that Iran becomes like Afghanistan and Iraq and runs into difficulties,” Abtahi was cited as saying during the session by the state-run Fars news agency. “Fraud was the code word used for people to be mobilized,” said Abtahi, a cleric, who was shown in the picture testifying without his turban and wearing a grey prisoner outfit. Western media have played “an instrumental role in fuelling the unrest” and some reporters have sought to encourage a “colored revolution” in Iran, Maziar Bahari, a detained Tehran-based reporter for Newsweek magazine, was reported as saying during the trial, according to state-run Mehr news agency. Authorities need to intensify their scrutiny on local reporters, Bahari reportedly said.
Ex-president Khatami rejected the conditions of the trial, saying it was not held in an open session and lawyers and the defendants were not informed of the timing and the contents of the cases prior to it. The Tehran-based Etemade Meli newspaper said only state media was allowed at the proceedings. State television broadcast extracts of the trials last night. The ex-president reiterated his call for putting on trial “perpetrators of crimes in detention centers.” At least two individuals have died while in custody, according to local reports. Iran has reportedly released a large number of the protestors, though hundreds still remain in detention.

After a mass trial session against detained Iranian opposition figures and protesters, influential cleric and official Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani questions the legitimacy of confessions made in the courtroom.
The first court session for opposition activists and protesters convened in Tehran on Saturday to determine the fate of those charged with acting against national security and conspiring with foreign powers to stage a "Velvet Revolution".
A leading Reformist, Mohammad-Ali Abtahi, who served as a deputy under former president Mohammad Khatami, accused the influential figure of having taken an "oath" with opposition leaders.
Abtahi, who has been in custody since June 16, also charged that Ayatollah Rafsanjani sought to avenge his 2005 presidential defeat to the incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the 2009 election.
Ayatollah Rafsanjani, who heads both the top political arbitration body called the Expediency Council as well as the Assembly of Experts -- the top clerical body which appoints the Leader of the Islamic Revolution --, was quick to deny the charges.
In a statement issued by the Expediency Council on Saturday, the two-time former president rejected Abtahi's claims as a "lie".
Rafsanjani having "taken an oath with Mr. Khatami and Mousavi to protect each other is a sheer lie," the statement said, the Iranian Labor News Agency (ILNA) reported.
Rafsanjani "did not endorse any presidential candidates and has not had any part in the post-election unrest," it added.
The cleric, who has been under fire from the ruling elite, moved to question the reliability of the confessions.
"It is unclear that under which conditions and considerations these confessions have been made," the statement added.

Bi-Honar 08-02-2009, 05:31 PM Yeah, quite a few of them were arrested on their way to Rafi's Friday sermon Rasoul jaan. They were planning to show up in their uniforms as a sign of protest to AN & Co.
BTW, HUGE demonstrations are planned for both tomorrow (Monday) and Wednesday. The plan is to bring Tehran to a stand still tomorrow and I'm certain the reformists will increase all their pressure and activities this week. Afterall, if this trial and AN's methods continue, with so many high ranking IR officials already facing charges, there's absolutely no reason for AN & Co. to stop there. This truly is a do-or-die week for the reformers.

Motori 08-02-2009, 05:44 PM Toofan,
I don't agree with titles of the clips you posted.
Why are they saying Abtahi & Atrianfar betrayed Iranians?
Not every one is so stellar for taking torture and facing eminent firing squad without breaking down for 2 month.
I.S has made 10s of 1000s of Iranians to confess for crimes which they have not committed and sign an affidavit of repent. I personally have 2 of those confessions in their files.
