And NATO forces getting themselves killed hoping they can plant seed of democracy in a society dominated by misogynists cavemen.


'No sex, no food' law passed in Afghanistan

Afghanistan has enacted a new legislation empowering men of Shia sect of Islam to deny their wives food and sustenance if they refuse to obey their husbands' sexual demands, a media report said on Saturday.

The new final draft of the legislation also grants guardianship of children exclusively to their fathers and grandfathers, and requires women to get permission from their husbands to work, The Guardian reported.

"It also effectively allows a rapist to avoid prosecution by paying 'blood money' to a girl who was injured when he raped her," the report said quoting US charity Human Rights Watch.

In early April, US President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown joined an international chorus of condemnation when the earlier version of the law legalised rape within marriage.

Although Afghan President Hamid Karzai appeared to back down, activists said the revised law still contained repressive measures and contradicted Afghanistan's constitution and international treaties it is signed up to.

According to the report, the new law has been backed by the hardline Shia cleric Ayatollah Mohseni, who is thought to have influence over the voting intentions of some Shias, who make up
around 20 per cent of the population.

Karzai has assiduously courted such minority leaders in the run up to next Thursday's election, which is likely to be close, a poll indicated on Saturday.

That country is the most illiterate and naturally backward place on face of this planet. And that Karzai fucker, including his brother(s) and gang are rubbing that country from all the money western countries have been spending in that place for years. Poor Afgans have absolutely nothing to show for!! I've got a couple of very close friends that have been visiting/working there for years now, the things they tell me and the pictures they have shown me is unfucking believable (sorry for strong language). Karzai and his corrupt government are there for one and only one reason, to rub poor people of Afghanistan and continue to fatten up their pockets. Once the feast is over they all going to come back to live in US again.

US government will be there for maaaany years to come, they are spending tax payers money just to keep the taleban and Paki extremist in check, nothing else will materialize from all the lives and billions of $$$$$$$$$$$$ that has been spent over there.

Back to the Taliban days! This is what happens when you force a system to one end of the scale. I have a few Afghani friends who run the corner convenient store and we often talk about the Iran and Afghanistan's politics. One of the guys, worked on the Canadian Forces base (doing radio broadcasting) and they now want to ship him to Kandahar. The pay is obviously great (I think he said he'd be netting $10,000 CDN a month - with all expenses paid for). Anyway, they're always really hopeful about the situation and think the US presence has been benficial, but it's one thing judging it from this side of the ocean and another thing being there and dealing with it first hand. There is a lot of corruption there though, Hamid jaan, that's for sure.
