Well, it looks like the IR can add "khod-kafaei" and export of Methamphetamines (street names: speed, meth, crystal) to its report card. A group of 10 Iranians, including 8 veiled women, arriving from Malaysia, Syria & Qatar were arrested at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta airport, carrying 60 lbs. of the drug presumably in pill or powder format and 23 liters in liquid format.

The drugs were wrapped in plastic food containers (!!!) and bottles of cleaning fluid which raised the suspicion of the scanners at the airport. Until now, Iran has not really been known as a producer and/or exporter of Meth which is unlikely to have a huge market in Iran, but is commonly used in South-East Asian countries (including Indonesia and Thailand) by the working class to increase their stamina and work hours. Indonesia has very tough sentences for drug trafficers and the group is expected to receive the death-sentence.

Meth was alledgedly used by US pilots in Afghanistan in the famous "friedny-fire" incident involving Canadian ground troops. Its use had also reached epidemic proportions in the US and became the focus of DEA's battle against drugs severl years ago. Often referred to as "poor man's coke", meth was being produced from primary over-the-counter material sold in convenient and drug stores. Legislation has been put in place since both in Canada and the US to reduce the availability of these primary material.

The process of "cooking-up" meth produces highly volatile and flammable gasses and is therefore extremely dangerous for unsuspecting neighbours. The highly addictive drug can alter judgement, create a sense of invincibility and cause serious paranoia and dillusions due to sleep-depravation.
