Schalke 04 let slip two vital points in their quest for the title, as VfL Bochum hit back from 2-0 down to salvage a point in a dramatic Ruhr district derby.

The 2-2 draw, earned with a Stanislav Sestak goal in added time, maintains Bochum's upward trend in recent games, but for their near-neighbours from Gelsenkirchen it will surely feel tantamount to a defeat. Had they held out for the win, the Royal Blues would have gone top of the table ahead of Bayer Leverkusen's visit to Hoffenheim on Sunday.

The visitors set about the task in hand in no uncertain manner, catching VfL cold with their first attack of the match in the fifth minute. Jefferson Farfan made ground down the right and played a low ball into the middle, which Vicente Sanchez had no trouble mopping up from five metres out to put Schalke in front.

Schalke in command

Bochum struggled to make any impact on Felix Magath's well-drilled men in the exchanges that followed, while Schalke carved out several half-chances and earned themselves a couple of corners as they gradually asserted their authority over the contest. The hosts got off with a warning when Kevin Kuranyi was inches away from connecting with a cross in the 34th minute, but their luck ran out shortly before half time.

Once again, Farfan was the instigator, nicking the ball inside from the right-hand edge of the box ahead of onrushing Bochum keeper Philipp Heerwagen. On this occasion, Kuranyi was the man in the middle waiting to stab home number two. A minute before the break, VfL finally got a sniff of their opponents' goal when Roman Prokoph hit the post from a tight angle, but the first half ended with the guests deservedly enjoying a two-goal cushion.

Bochum battle back

Two minutes after the restart, half-time sub Paul Freier had a chance to haul Bochum back into it, connecting with a low cross from the right at the near post, but his toe-poke was deflected wide for a corner. It was a promising start to the second 45 from the home side, who were looking considerably livelier now, and Freier tested Neuer again soon after with a shot from a difficult angle which the keeper easily dealt with.

In the 56th minute however, Schalke should really have put the result beyond doubt. Mergim Mavraj made a hash of a Sanchez cross from the left, leaving Kuranyi with a free pot on goal from five metres out, but Heerwagen pulled off a terrific save to deny him. That chance aside, it was Bochum very much in the driving seat now, forcing a series of corners which they were unable to capitalize on with the guests holding firm at the back.

Incredible finale

Still two down going into the final ten minutes, VfL upped the tempo once more. In the 82nd minute Christian Fuchs played the ball in from the left and Marcelo Bordon's attempted clearance had Neuer stretching to tip it over the bar. Milos Maric took the corner and Vahid Hashemian, ten minutes on the pitch as a substitute, powered the ball home unmarked from six metres out.

That was the cue for a thrilling end phase and in the final minute of regulation time Mavraj pulled a good save out of Neuer, rising to meet a Maric free kick from the right. That looked like being Bochum's last chance, but deep into added time supersub Hashemian charged down the left and floated in a cross almost from the goal-line which Stanislav Sestak headed home to dramatically rescue a point for the home side in the finest derby tradition.

Came in the 72th minute, scored one and assisted one against his old coach, Magath, and a team that topped the bundesliga, was undefeated for a while and had a couple of clean sheats the last games, I'd say thats a job well done. Good for him.

Good for him indeed.

I liked his assist more than his goal tbh.
