Hapless footballers are always finding new ways to score on their own team, but this might be the first time overpowering winds are to blame for redirecting the ball and notching an own goal.

In the second half of a real match between German lower division sides TSV Wimsheim and TSV Grunbach last Sunday, a Grunbach player attempted to launch a booming kick against the intense winds only to have the ball hang in the sky and come right back the way it came, bounce high over the goalkeeper's head and into the net, giving Wimsheim a 1-0 lead.

Wimsheim would go on to win 2-1 (http://fussball.die-ligen.de/node/25512), but if you're Grunbach, I think you just have to accept that the universe was against you that day and move on. Or consider that Newton's Laws of Motion weren't a joke.

This brings back bad memories. Playing keeper i had a goal (kinda) like that scored on me once. I came out to grab a ball that was hit in the air, didn't grab it, it bounced and the wind blew it over my head. even the ref laughed a little bit

Ba dorood:

One of the points that coaches usually pay attention is to keep the ball on the ground or use the air.

When it is windy, it is always best to keep short passes on ground but when the opposition are short, got use the aerial.

I am surprised that this basic rule was not stated by players or coaches.

I played for my college in USA and time to time got high winds so we all knew ball must stay on ground.

Well using to the wind smartly could always win or lose a game for you, it could be very usefull if you had he wind in your back, especially with long balls, altough you'd need to adjust accordingly. Ofcourse like Oldman said when you had the wind against you the best way was to play over the ground.

Looking into the sun or not was another important factor.

These factors all play less of a part in professional football though.
