I am sure you have all heard of this incident which happened yesterday. Apparently the accelarator stuck and the driver couldn't stop it!!! He had to break fast and cause burning or something and eventually stopped a log way off.

What I don't understand is why he didn't just shift the gear into neutral! Am I missing something?

Let's not forget by taking over GM - US government is now the biggest competitor of Toyota now !!

Differ,
He had enough time to call DPS on his cell.

Either way over hyped Toyota is in a big mess and their layers are running around like chicken with its head cut off.

Rasoul jan, so why did he not put the car in neutral? Isn't that better than putting on the break and accelerate at the same time?

Mr, Ped.
I don't know why he didn't take appropriate action but cynic in me is saying it was staged.

I don't know you remember or not, 25 years (?) ago some 1 was putting cyanide inside Tylenol pill bottles and actually killed many people just to stop Johnson & Johnson from runaway sale. J & J had pull over 30 billion pill bottles out of the market.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I really don't understand this whole incident as it panned out. All he had to do was shift gear into neutral, unless the gear stuck as well which is not the case. I have this bad habit of shifting into neutral long before I stop and in most dowhills.
I don't understand how no one else seems to mention it either in the media. It's very strange.

Lool Rasoul -
I am indeed - official member of the Florida Tea Party. And for some selfish reason I think the new tea parties have something to do with the orioginal Boston tea party - I am trying to get uncle Sam ready to kick some Royal asses once again!!! :chekerim::wavetowel2:

Having said that - I may reconsider, ever since June 09 elections the Brits seem to be doing OK - in Iran.

You're talking about a Pirus "driver" here Behrooz jaan! I'm not a huge car enthusist, but I doubt that Pirus is the first choice for any skillful or even half-decent driver! ;)

Behrooz jAn,
Bad Idea (habit), doing so you are loosing a phenomena know as engine braking.
If the engine and transmission remain connected the resistance of engine (now being rotated by the wheels) will help the brake system and shortens the braking distance. Same applies to going down hill, never with a Trans. in neutral.

Mr, G.
That was the reason I called it "over-hyped Toyota". Prius owners should feel lucky if they manage to get 40 MPG, at the same time VW Jetta 2.0 Dis. can get close to 55 MPG and the price tag here in US is only 23 grand and also quilifies for Gov. enviromental insentives, but since it looks like the other regular Jetta it will not make "statement" like Prius. Same applies to Honda Insight and Civic Hybrid.

I don't know much about Toyota Behrou jan, as I have never driven one. But someone told me last night that one feature of automatic toyota is that you can't shift gears in motion!!!? I couldn't quit understand this. I just don't understand this whole incident.

Oh I know it's a bad idea. I would never pass my driving test doing this. The thing with bad driving habits is they are hard to shake off.
But I think in my warped mind I do this to save fuel!! Not sure if it's actually effective but I keep thinking if I am not in gear I am not using much fuel other than necessary for the engine to be on :)

Behrooz jaan, are you shifting a stick into neutral or an automatic transmission? It's okay to do it with a stick (even if it may not quite serve a purpose) and Mr. A, probably can explain this better or correct me if I'm wrong, but with automatic transmission, you're not in control of the clutch so you're shifting into neutral when the gears engaged. It's like shifting a manual transmission into neutral without presseing the clutch and although it's doable, you can feel it binding/grinding a little bit.

Behrooz jAn,
It will not have any impact on fuel millage, when you let go the accelerator the throttle plate will be closed and certain amount of fuel will be injected in the engine just to sustain idle speed, regardless of where the shifter is.
