Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei on Sunday called on intellectuals, thinkers and academicians to study, research and devise a national and indigenous paradigm for advancement.

“It is crucial that advancement and justice in the fourth decade of the revolution becomes a national discourse so that in the wake of design and implementation of a national paradigm, Iran and its people take major steps to this end,“ he told a public rally of university students and professors in Sunni-dominated Kurdestan province, leader.ir reported.

He emphasized that the true meaning of advancement is different from the interpretation prevalent and advocated in the West.
“Of course, there may be commonalities between the true sense of advancement and the western interpretation of it which also deserves attention.“ Categorizing countries into developed, developing and underdeveloped is a tricky tactic of the West, he said.

“In this tactic, the notion of development is coupled with a western-type value in a manner that a developed country is said to be one which is western or pseudo-western embracing its cultural values and political orientation. We simply do not accept such a reading,“ he said.

The leader recalled that historical, geographical, political and cultural conditions determine the model for development of a country.

“Given the vast differences in conditions of different countries, there cannot exist one prescription for development and growth. In view of Iran’s history, culture and other specific conditions we cannot attain development by abiding by American-European or other paradigms. The real thing is that we seek an indigenous model for development. Academics and thinkers play the main role in fulfilling this historic mission,“ he pointed out.

Ayatollah Khamenei also underlined the role and influence of ethical values in determining a development paradigm for all countries.

“While adhering to an indigenous national paradigm for development, we should also pay attention to the strong points in the western paradigm, such as the spirit of taking risks, innovation, discipline and courage. It is also crucial that justice be collated with advancement in devising an indigenous model for advancement. In western models, increase in the GDP is viewed as a key indicator, but in the Islamic view if there is injustice and a wide socioeconomic gap, even if the GDP is high and rising real development will not have been achieved,“ he pointed out.
