After the last meeting of the Association for Militant Clergy (Jame Rohaniyat Mobarez) was left unfinished, and while the members of the conservative Association remain unable to reach a consensus, causing public divisions among senior members of the Association, the Qom Seminary School Teachers’ Association [Jame Modarresin] released a one-line statement supporting Ahmadinejad. This one-line statement failed to receive the required vote of support at the Teachers’ Association meeting.

The Qom Seminary School Teachers’ Association’s one-line statement, which was sent to newspapers yesterday, said, “After the necessary discussions, the majority members of the Qom Seminary School Teachers’ Association have announced their support for Mr. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.”

But before long after the statement, the Association’s president, cleric Mohammad Yazdi, admitted at a press conference that, following several discussion sessions, Ahmadinejad has not yet received the required vote of support from the Association and that, according to an agreement, it was announced that only the “majority” members have supported Ahmadinejad.

Yazdi, meanwhile, pointed out that the Association’s half-hearted endorsement of Ahmadinejad does not amount to full support for him, adding, “The ninth administration’s weaknesses and shortcomings have been discussed and directly relayed to Mr. Ahmadinejad.”

The Qom Seminary School Teachers’ Association’s president endorsed Ahmadinejad while websites close to Principalists critical of the administration revealed a few days ago that “Mr. Ahmadinejad’s candidacy has been opposed by several significant members of the Association, and even two of the grand ayatollahs (highest authorities in Shia jurisprudence) have announced their opposition.”

However, despite this organization’s half-hearted support for Ahmadinejad, which was described as humiliating by the reformist website Jomhuriat, the other conservative clerical establishment, the Association for Militant Clergy is yet to reach a consensus on Ahmadinejad’s candidacy. Reports from the latest meeting of the organization’s senior members indicate general confusion and indecision among the right-wing’s spiritual fathers.

Mahdavi Kani, Supreme Leader’s Messenger?

Early last week, websites close to the administration published reports indicating the preference of Mahdavi Kani, the Association for Militant Clergy’s president, to support Ahmadinejad. Other reports indicated the opposition of Hashemi Rafsanjani to endorsing Ahamdinejad.

Reaction to such reports, the website “Ayandeh” reported that some conservative circles have been pressuring Kani to endorse Ahmadinejad, noting that, after failing to secure the Association for Militant Clergy’s endorsement of Ahmadinejad, supporters of the administration were lobbying to have Kani deliver a message to the members of the Association for Militant Clergy that “the Supreme Leader endorses Ahmadinejad.”

Independent sources have not yet confirmed whether Mahdavi Kani is delivering such a message, and what role Hashemi Rafsanjani has played in this midst.
